Negron, Seminoles Looking to Rebound From Poor Fall Showing

(January 20, 2012) - Jessica Negron and her Florida State Seminole teammates experienced a disappointing fall schedule at three events in Bryan, Texas, Norman, Oklahoma, and Wilmington, N. C.
Jessica, the former star at Ocala's West Port High School, shot 75-78-81-234 at the 'Mo Morial' Tournament in Texas, then followed with rounds of 70-73-80-223 at the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic in Norman. At the Landfall Tradition in North Carolina, she put together rounds of 80-80-73-233. All the events were played at par-72 venues. Her round of 70 and the two 73s turned out to be three of the top nine rounds the team posted in the three events.
The 2012 spring season begins on Feb. 13 at the Northrup Grumman Regional Challenge in Palos Verdes, Ca. and the 'Noles will be looking to turn it up many notches en route to the NCAA Championships in May in Tennessee. After Palos Verdes, the 'Noles play in New Orleans beginning Feb. 26. The Gator Invitational comes up in Gainesville on March 16, then there are two more events in Athens, Ga. and Greensboro, N. C., prior to the ACC Championship, also in Greensboro, on April 13. The NCAA Regionals are in Erie, Colo. beginning May 10.

ZYLSTRA WINS MICHIGAN SENIOR AMATEUR

BILL ZYLSTRA's made his trip back to Marion County seem shorter as he was able to reflect on winning his third Michigan State Senior Amateur Championship. ZYLS shot even par for the 36-hole event. His previous State Senior Am titles came in 2008 and 2010.

Negron Ties For 45th at NCAA Finals

(May 24, 2011) - Ocalan Jessica Negron posted scores of 72-79-77-73-301, 13 over par, to finish in a tie for 45th place in the NCAA Division ! Championships in Bryan, Texas. Jessica, a sophomore who went to West Port High, played her last 17 holes in even par and her final seven in two under. She three-putted twice in the final round and finished 20 strokes behind Austin Ernst of LSU, whose 281 was seven under and good for a three-stroke victory.
UCLA won the team title with 1173, 21 over par, good for a four-stroke victory over Purdue. Florida's team finished tied for 10th with a score of 1196, 44 over par. Andrea Watts led the Gators with five-over 293 and tied for 15th. Mia Piccio was one behind and tied for 19th, while Evan Jensen tied with Jessica at 301. Isabelle Lendl rounded out the Gators scoring at 317. FSU did not qualify as a team, losing to Vanderbilt in a playoff in the Regionals, and Jessica played as one of six individuals in the event. She posted 10 birdies over the 72 holes.

Negron Finishes Third, Makes It To NCAA Finals

(May 10, 2011) - Florida's women's golfers made it through the NCAA Divison I Regional Playoffs this week at LPGA International, but FSU's ladies missed going to the NCAA finals  by losing to Vanderbilt in a one-hole playoff. Despite the team loss, Ocala's Jessica Negron tied for third and will make the trip to the Traditions Course at Bryan, Texas as an individual.
Florida's ladies shot a 54-hole total of 880 to finish seventh in the 24-team event, as the top eight teams advanced to the finals. The Gators were only four strokes away from Coastal Carolina in fourth place. Mia Piccio led the Gators with 75-74-69-218, the same as teammate Isabelle Lendl, who shot 72-78-68-218. The two tied for 11th in the individual race.
The Seminoles were another 10 strokes back in eighth with 890, and lost the playoff to Vanderbilt when they made three pars and two bogeys on the first extra hole, while the Commodores made four pars and one bogey. Jessica, a sophomore, fired rounds of 69-73-74-216, even par, to deadlock for third and cement her position for the finals as an individual. Stephanie Meadow of Alabama was the medalist with nine-under 207, six strokes ahead of runner-up Pia Halbig of California.  Alabama won the team title by two strokes over North Carolina, 866-868, with Arizona State another three back in third.

(January 12, 2011) - Jessica Negron and her Florida State Seminole teammates have begun practice for the important spring portion of their golf schedule.     The former star at Ocala's West Port High and her mates haven't competed since the Landfall Tradition in Wilmington, N. C. in the fall. FSU finished 15th out of 18 teams, but were without two of their best players, Macrena Silva of Chile and Maria Salinas of Peru, who were each competing for their countries in the Women's World Amateur Championships. Jessica shot rounds of 73-81-74-228.
In the previous event, the Lady Tar Heel Invitational, Jessica was disqualified in the first round of the 54-hole event and her score didn't count (for that round) after she incorrectly dropped an imbedded ball. She then led her team with rounds of 72 and 69, the latter her best round of the season.

Warner shot rounds of 75-79-154 in trying to reach the 64-man match play field, and missed the cut by two strokes as there was an 11-way playoff at 152 for the final 10 spots.
Zylstra, who has enjoyed success in this event in the past, shot 74-73-147 and qualified in a tie for 17th place, as did Alexander, who shot 73-74. Alexander won the U. S. Amateur in 1986.

Zylstra, Warner Qualify For USGA Senior Amateur

(September 10, 2010) - Following in the footsteps of Bo Williams and the late Moot Thomas, two Marion County golfers have qualified for the upcoming USGA Senior Amateur to be played at Laka Nona Golf & Country Club from Oct. 2-7.
Bill Zylstra, who divides his time between Ocala and Michigan, qualified at the Jackson Country Club in Jackson, Michigan. After firing a one-under 71, Bill was deadlocked with two others for two spots. All three players parred the frist playoff hole, but Bill advanced to Lake Nona with a birdie at the second. This will be his third trip to the Amateur. A few years ago, he lost in the third round of match play to famed Walker Cupper Vinnie Giles, the 2009 winner and one of only two players ever to win both the U. S. Amateur and Senior Amateur.
Berger Warner of Ocala tied for the medal with a 73 at Lakes Wales Country Club and will be making his first trip to the Amateur. Over the years, Warner has won just about every title on the Marion County schedule.
Williams made Ocala history by winning the Senior Amateur twice, in 1986 and 1989. Thomas is one of only two players to qualify for the event at the age of 75 when he competed at The Farm Golf Club in Rocky Face, Ga.. Moot failed to make it to the match-play phase after shooting 85-84.

But Park came right back and evened the match with pars at five and six. They halved the next  three holes, and Jesse went one-up again with a birdie at the par-four 10th.
Park then won three holes in a row to take a 2-up lead, winning the 11th with a par and the 12th and 13th with birdies. Jesse got one back with a birdie three at 14 and squared the match at 16 when Park was unable to make par.
But Park took over on the 119-yard 17th hole with a birdie two to go one-up, and they halved No. 18 with par fours. Park shot 41-35-76 with three birdies, while Jesse shot 42-35-77, also with three birdies.

Salinas, Negron Lead Seminoles To NCAA 10th

(May 22, 2010) - The FSU women's golf team tailed off a bit in Friday's final round of the NCAA Championships, but still managed the best finish in the school's history. The Seminole girls posted a score of 297, nine over par at the Country Club of Landfall's Dye Course in Wilmington, N. C., and wound up in 10th place out of 23 teams in the Division 1 event.
The Seminoles finished with a 72-hole score of 1,182, 29 strokes behind winner Purdue, which squeaked out a one-stroke victory over USC. Alabama was another three strokes back in third, four ahead of Arizona State.
Freshman Jessica Negron of Ocala carded a four-over 76 in the final round, and wound up tied for 21st place in the individual standings. The West Port High graduate posted rounds of 69-76-71-76-292, four over par. She was one stroke behind teammate Maria Salinas, who was 20th with rounds of 70-75-74-72-291. It marked the first time in the school's history that it had two players in the top 25. Negron's finish was the best ever for a Seminole freshman in the event.
FSU's 1,182 total was also the school's best in its Division 1 Championship history, 16 strokes better than the 2004 team, which finished in a tie for 19th. The best previous placing for the team - 13th - came in 1999.

Negron Leads Noles Into Tie For 9th

(May 21, 2010) - The FSU women's golf team has never finished higher than 13th place in the NCAA Championships, and no individual has ever been higher than 28th. But the current Seminoles have a chance to eclipse both those marks today in Wilmington, N. C.
With Ocala freshman Jessica Negron leading the way, the Seminole girls shot 6-over-par 294 Thursday and moved into a tie for ninth place in the Division 1 Championships at the par 72 Country Club of Landfall course. Jessica posted the Noles' best round of the day and second best of the first 54 holes, a one-under-par 71, that lifted her into a deadlock for 10th place after rounds of 69-76-71. At even-par 216, Jess is nine strokes behind leader Jennifer Johnson of Arizona State, who added a two-under 70 Thursday to finish at nine-under 207.
The rest of the Seminoles scores: Maria Salinas added a two-over 74 and is tied for 23rd at 219; Hannah Thomson (75) is tied fro 59th with 225, as is Macarena Silva, who shot 74.
Purdue took over the top spot on the leaderboard at 858 after a third-round 280, eight under par. Southern California is second at 865, while Arizona State and Alabama are deadlocked for third with 871. FSU is tied for ninth with Texas A&M and Oklahoma State
With a solid final round today - the Seminoles tee off in the company of Auburn (8th) and UCLA (7th) beginning at 1:25 - Jessica can easily post FSU's best individual finish at the NCAAs. All-American Kristin Tamulis finished 28th in the event in 2003. The team's best finish came in 1999.

Negron Tied For 18th At NCAA Championships

(May 20, 2010) - Jessica Negron has posted rounds of 69-76-145, one over par, at the halfway point of the NCAA Division 1 Women's Golf Championships being played at the Country Club of Landfall's Dye Course in Wilmington, N. C.

Jessica, an 18-year-old freshman at Florida State, is tied for 18th place in the individual standings, eight strokes behind leader Jennifer Johnson of Arizona State, who shot 67-70-137. In the team competition, the Seminoles shot an excellent 289 on Tuesday, just one over par, but slipped to 302 on Wednesday and Thursday, as rain forced six teams to complete their second rounds Thursday morning. FSU tees off in the third round this afternoon in the company of Oklahoma State and Duke.
Jessica, an Ocalan who starred on the West Port High team, was even par after 13 holes of the second round, and when play resumed this morning, she made four pars and one bogey. She's tied with Maria Salinas (70-75-145) for the best score among Seminole players. Hannah Thomson (74-76) is next at 150, followed by Macarena Silva with 76-75-151. Neither of Lacey Agnew's scores (78-81) counted in the best four-of-five competition which features 126 players.
